Statement
Marianne majored in painting while doing her
undergraduate degree in Fine Art. She then went on to do her Masters
Degree in Fine Art at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Shortly after completing her studies in 1999, she moved to London,
England where she participated in a number of group shows and had a
solo show in 2004. Since then,
Marianne moved to Toronto, Canada. She has work in numerous private
collections in South Africa, London, Eindhoven and New York.
Marianne’s work has always been concerned directly or
indirectly with identity. Portraiture can be a means of communicating
complex identity. Identity is not only linked to appearance, but also
to history, heritage, culture, location, personal and religious rituals
and individual circumstances. Displacement and Travel has played a
major role in her life and has impacted on how she views individual
identity and the alteration thereof. Life changing events, like
relocating across continents and having children, impacts on the
understanding one has of one’s relationship with the self and
with the environment. This comes through in her more recent works where
portraits, skies and landscapes become the markers for displacement and
dislocation. |
